Dog refuses to leave owner’s grave

This iconic and heart-rending photograph captures a moment of unwavering loyalty following a catastrophic natural disaster.

The dog, named Leão (Lion), was photographed lying patiently next to the grave of her owner, Cristina Maria Cesario Santana, at the cemetery in Teresopolis, near Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Cristina was tragically killed in the catastrophic landslides and flooding that ravaged the mountainous region in 2011, which was one of the country’s worst flood disasters on record.

The image was taken on a Saturday, marking the second consecutive day that the medium-sized brown mutt refused to leave the woman’s grave. The devastating scene perfectly encapsulated the profound sense of loss felt across the country, showing that the grief extended even to the animal kingdom.

Though Leão was eventually rescued by volunteers, her image became a global symbol of the singular, unbreakable bond between a human and their companion animal, often cited in the same vein as the famous story of Greyfriars Bobby
