Shoc.k: Only about 40-50% of the chicken nugget is real meat…

n 2013, Dr. Richard deShazo, a professor of medicine and pediatrics at the University of Mississippi, conducted his own examination of chicken nuggets from two unnamed fast-food chains. What he discovered shocked him. He found that only about 40 to 50 percent of the nugget was actual chicken meat. The remaining portion was made up of fat, skin, connective tissue, blood vessels, nerves, and tiny fragments of bone.

“I was floored. I had read other reports on this, but I didn’t believe them until I saw it under a microscope,” deShazo said. His findings revealed how some companies create chicken nuggets. Instead of using lean, low-fat white meat, they combine different parts of the chicken into an artificial mixture, coat it in batter, and fry it. Even though it contains these mixed parts, it is still marketed and sold as chicken.

DeShazo’s work highlights concerns about the quality and composition of processed foods, especially those marketed to children. Many people eat chicken nuggets without realizing how much of the product is not actual meat. His research shows the importance of understanding what goes into popular fast foods and the need for transparency in food labeling so consumers can make informed choices.
